Floating Above a White Draped Room is an exhibition of abstract paintings and richly-layered mixed media works by Anne Lloyd that explore connections between states of being through a process guided by intuition.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Dripping water hollows out stone, not through force but through persistence.” - Ovid

I’ve always been interested in in-between transitional spaces, not being one thing or another, but rather “on the way to becoming”. This facilitates an ongoing process of growth.

My work is inspired by books, music, other artists work, nature, and life. I read about a drop of water as the basis for stories across many lives over several centuries. Within these stories there’s a perspective of connectivity between all living things. I carry these ideas on a macro and micro level into layers of my work.

The paintings are intuitive, personal, and may evolve into a narrative. While the work appears lyrical and whimsical, there are personal underlying symbols. I create my own chaos, and then solve my way out. It’s a process that, at best, flows and self-directs. The work is built up in additive layers with paint and oil pastels using my hands, rags, sandpaper, or other tools to mark the surface.

My early work in photography and printmaking informs the work I make now in that the idea of the support system--the paper or canvas--becomes part of the final piece. The edges are important, as is the space around the image area.

Many of the pieces in this show were created or re-worked in the last five years. During the pandemic, with the sudden break in routine, it was possible to concentrate with greater continuity.
